Javier Mariscal has played a crucial role in the rapid emergence of the modern design activity that engulfed Barcelona in the early 1980's. He was born in Valencia in 1950, but went to Barcelona to study at the Elisava School of Graphics, from which he graduated in 1971. His early furniture designs were exhibited in a shop in Barcelona and seen by Ettore Sottsass who promptly invited Mariscal to design some pieces for Memphis - it was this work that brought Mariscal widespread public attention - his modernist style reflects influences of Miro and Gaudi using bold, expressive colours and cartoon like forms. He has since produced work for Moroso and Alessi.
