GRAVES - Michael Graves

A self-confessed follower of ‘American style', Graves rationale is more concerned with practical style than strict adherence to theoretical practice. Art Deco and pre-Columbian culture are also sources of inspiration that have left his audience enchanted by his designs.
Michael Graves was born in Indianapolis, USA. He received his architectural training at the University of Cincinnati and Harvard University. In 1960 he won the Rome Prize and went on to study at the American Academy in Rome, of which he is now a Trustee. Among his projects are the Portland Building in Cincinnati, the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin Hotels. He is the winner of fifteen Progressive Architecture design awards, and many other international awards. He began designing objects for Alessi in 1984 - the most famous of which is the 'Bird Kettle' which spawned a whole Range of Kitchen accoutrements in the same style.

The New Alessi Teapot, designed by Michael Graves, was produced to meet the demand of us British - who love a cuppa tea! Alessi have for years produced an array of coffee making equipment, always overlooking the obvious... not everyone drinks coffee!

So here we have a proper Tea Pot - in the distinctive Michael Grave style, polished stainless steel body & handle in either Blue or Ivory.

This 1985 original design Alessi Kettle with Bird continues to go from strength to strength.
Michael Graves' highly personal and easy to recognise formal style blends influences from various sources: the European tradition, Art Deco, American POP, with flashes of pre-Colombian culture. He has an incredible ability to tune into public taste, even that of the man on the street: he is not a lover of theory, but he once admitted his wish to help create an 'American Style'.

MR MOUSE CHEESE BOARD - Alessi, - Michael Graves Range
The Alessi Michael Graves Cheese Board, is a compilation of several elements - we use ours for far more than just cheese! It makes a great cake serving tray & the dome can be used on its own to cover other plates and dishes!
The Set comprises of a steel Tray base, a ceramic cutting board in the form of a cheese with holes, crowned by a transparent domed cover - the handle is a cute smiling mouse.

Press Filter - Cafetiere - - Michael Graves Range, Alessi, * coffee club
Michael Graves designed this coffee maker for Alessi in 1988, as a development to his famous Bird Kettle! He drew inspiration from a method of making coffee that was very popular in Northern Europe & America, but actually originated in Italy in the 1920's: The Press Filter.

And....did you know...... this type of Press Filter is also great for making TEA!!!

Sugar Bowl and Creamer - - Michael Graves Range, Alessi
The Alessi Michael Graves Sugar Bowl and Cream Jug were designed by Graves in 1988 following the huge success of the Bird Tea Kettle. The Sugar Bowl comes complete with lid and small spoon. While the Creamer can of course be used for milk or cream.
As we have already suggested the Graves Press Filter Cafetiere is fantastic for making tea as well as coffee - so this jug and sugar bowl can complete a set for tea lovers as well as coffee drinkers.

Pepper Mill and Salt Castor - - Michael Graves Range, Alessi
This Alessi classic Pepper Mill / Grinder uses an adjustable grinding mechanism which makes it easy for you to change between a coarse and fine grind for your pepper.
The salt castor nicely compliments the peppermill on the table - though it can only be used to dispense fine pre-ground salt .

Kitchen Timer - - Michael Graves Range, Alessi
The now Classic Alessi 09 Kitchen Timer designed by Michael Graves in 1991, is made of stainless steel and polymide. It has a mechanical clockwork movement with a maximum time setting of 60 minutes. The buzzer briefley sounds for approximately 3 seconds when the time is up.

A now unmistakable look - these Alessi Michael Graves cups and mugs designed in 1989 have the distinctive shield of steel rings, with easy-grip handles, ideal for those drowsy, half-asleep breakfasts.

The heat resistant glasses keep their contents piping hot and have a very delicate feel. The Demitasse cups and saucers are only available in a gift boxed set of 2 priced at Ł65, while the Mugs are available individually priced at Ł31 each.
