SOWDEN - George Sowden
| George J. Sowden, was born in Leeds, England. He studied architecture at Gloucestershire College of Art. In 1970 he began working in Milan as a consultant for Olivetti. In 1980 he opened his own studio. His parallel research about design objects and decorations, enabled him to become a founding member of Memphis in 1981. |
In 1990 he had a travelling exhibition presented by the French 'Musées Des Arts Décoratifs'. Winner of a Smau prize and Compasso d'oro, the Sowden Design Studio works for many industries both in Italy and abroad. In recent years Studio Sowden Design Associates has concentrated on the design and development of electrical products.
Given his love of rounded contours and vibrant shades, it is no surprise that this innovative designer has created a stylish desktop calculator Dauphine and an exciting variation on the kitchen timer Alphonse both for Alessi ( both unfortunately now discontinued).
