JACOBSEN - Arne JacobsenJACOBSEN - Arne Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen brought post war Danish Design international recognition by allying it with modern architecture rather than arts and crafts hand making methods. Born in Copenhagen in 1902, Jacobsen studied first as a mason at the Technical School in Copenhagen and subsequently in the 1920s, as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, from where he graduated in 1927. For the next three years he worked in the architectural office of Paul Holsoe, and in 1930 he opened his own architectural office in Hellerup, which he headed until his death in 1971.

Though he originally made contact with the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen in the 1930s, it was not until after the war that the technology became available for Jacobsens modernist designs to actually be produced. Resulting in the 'Ant' chair of 1951 and the 'Swan' and 'Egg' Chairs of 1958. Jacobsen simple style also produced a geometric range of kitchenware for Stelton and sleek Cutlery for Georg Jensen.
