SAPPER - Richard Sapper

SAPPER - Richard Sapper Combining innovation and traditional and cited as the man ‘who has never done a bad design’, this free spirited craftsman has created items that have altered the course of design history.
Born in Munich, Germany in 1932, Richard Sapper studied philosophy, anatomy, graphic design and engineering, and later received a degree in economics in 1956.
During his academic years, he decided to pursue a career in industrial design and upon completing his studies he joined the design department of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart.
He moved to Milan in 1957 where we worked for Gio Ponti and Alberto Rosselli and later for Rinascente. He opened his own Milan studio in 1958 and initiated a part-time collaboration with Marco Zanuso, a relationship which lasted until 1977 and produced important fruits.
Products from this period include the sheet metal chair Lambda for Gavina (1963), the polyethylene child's seat K 1340 for Kartell (1964). Richard Sapper worked as a consultant with FIAT on experimental cars and with Pirelli on tire design from 1970 to 1976.
Since 1980 he has been in charge of worldwide product design for the IBM Corporation. His work includes pieces that have become design classics such as the Artemide lamp, Tizio (1972) and the 'Melodic' kettle for Alessi (1983). His products have won him the Compasso d'Oro prize ten times as well as a host of international awards.
His clients include Alessi, Artemide, Castelli, Comforto, IBM, and Knoll International. Numerous Richard Sapper products are exhibited in the permanent collections of MOMA in New York, as well as other Design Museums across the world.

TodoTodo - Alessi
Alessi Todo - extra large Grater - Design: Richard Sapper

A giant grater which is dually interesting, as its aesthetic qualities ovecome the reluctance to display such as practical item at the table, and then its size, which allows enough parmesan cheese to be grated per plate with a single stroke. Likely to give the traditional giant Italian peppermill a run for its money :-)
